i is only national press circulation riser as most nationals see double digit print sales falls

By Press Gazette

The Independent’s cut-price stablemate the i was the only national newspaper to grow print sales year on year in February.

Looking at the dailies the Daily Star, The Sun, Financial Times, The Guardian and The Independent all lost more than 10 per cent of their sale year on year.

In the Sundays the declines are exaggerated by the fact that some titles were still holding on to post News of the World closure boosts this time last year.

The Sun Sunday had its first year-on-year comparison and was down 40.5 per cent on its launch ABC with average sales of 1.9m a week.

Mirror titles editor in chief Lloyd Embley celebrated out-performing The Sun in terms of year on year decline as the biggest selling daily felt the effects of a cover price increase compared to this time last year.

Embley said: “Day in day out we produce some of the most compelling popular journalism in the UK. Last night we won two awards at the Press Awards, including the prestigious Cudlipp award, while today we can see that on the year-on-year analysis the Daily Mirror has now outperformed the popular market for the eighth consecutive month. Consistently turning out high-quality newspapers for our readers really does count.”
