Head teachers join campaign against Sun showing topless models on Page Three

By William Turvill

School head teachers have become the latest group to give their backing to the campaign to drop topless models from The Sun.

The National Association of Head Teachers voted in favour of the motion to join the No More Page Three campaign at an executive meeting. The vote, by 45 executive members (who represent 28,500 members overall), was unanimous.

The NAHT joins the likes of the Girl Guides and Unison in backing the campaign, which was started last summer.

“NAHT is delighted to add their support to this important issue,” NAHT general secretary Russell Hobby said.

“School leaders understand the importance of protecting children and young people from inappropriate adult material, whether online, on television or within the pages of the popular press.

“Our members have told us about the problems the easy availability of pictures like these cause, as children, especially very young children, can find such images confusing and embarrassing."

He added: “Most adults recognise the importance of the watershed and online parental controls for computers and game consoles – most also appreciate the need to restrict the publication of pictures like those seen on Page Three to adult-only publications.”

Despite dropping the News in Briefs section of Page Three, new Sun editor David Dinsmore has said that topless models will remain in the paper.
