The Guardian has appointed The Financial Times‘s interactive editor Damian Carrington as editor of its environment pages Guardian.co.uk.
Carrington, a former BBC News online science reporter, spent seven years as editor of News Scientist’s website and was named Online Editor of the Year the British Society of Magazine Editors Awards.
Emily Bell, director of digital content for Guardian News and Media, said: ‘Damian’s combination of specialist knowledge and thorough understanding of web journalism will further strengthen guardian.co.uk’s award winning websites.’
Carrington, who has a PhD in earth sciences, said his task was to make The Guardian “the leading source of green news, comment and advice in the world”.
‘The challenge is great, but so is the talent at the Guardian, both in its journalism and its website development,’he said.
The Guardian was the first newspaper to create a regular environment section and the first to introduce ethical living pages. The paper said today that guardian.co.uk’s environment section attracted over one million unique users last month.
Ian Katz, the paper’s executive editor in charge of environmental coverage, said: ‘Damian is one of the most experienced and imaginative online journalists in the country and is the perfect person to take our green web offering to a new level.”
