By John Reynolds

Gordon Smart, editor of The Scottish Sun, is returning to England to become The Sun’s deputy editor.

Smart, who joined The Sun in 2004 writing for its showbusiness pages, will effectively become number three on the UK's best-selling national daily title.

Scotland-born Smart, 35, has been the editor in Scotland since 2013. He began his career with DC Thomson in Dundee and went on to edit The Sun’s Bizarre column.

The editor of The Sun Tony Gallagher has sent an email to staff informing them of Smart’s return. Number two on The Sun is Simon Cosyns, who is also deputy editor.

During his tenure as editor of the Scottish Sun, Smart oversaw the paper’s coverage of Scottish independence.

As well as being a journalist, Smart has also been a radio show host on XFM.

Smart's appointment was one of a number announced on The Sun. Dan Wootton, editor of Bizarre, has been promoted to associate editor (TV and showbiz) and will now have responsibility for a new section called Bizarre TV.

Will Payne has been promoted to deputy editor of Sun Online and the Daily Mail's football news correspondent Neil Ashton is joining The Sun as chief football reporter.
