The Financial Times has announced the appointment of Gillian Tett as US managing editor taking over from Martin Dickson.
Tett will take charge of the FT's US print and digital editorial operations as of 1 September. She will continue to write a twice-weekly column.
Dickson is to retire after 37 years with the FT.
Editor Lionel Barber said: “Martin Dickson is a distinguished journalist, manager and editor whose commitment, astute judgment and deep knowledge of business and finance have made an invaluable contribution to the FT for more than three decades. As deputy editor from 2005 to 2012, he played an indispensable role in the transformation of the FT into a digital first news organisation with an increasing global presence. In the US, he has led the newsroom with deft authority, strengthening our reputation in an important market.”
He said that Tett's role will be "crucial as we continue to transform and develop the Financial Times for a new generation of readers".
Tett has been with the FT since 1993 and has a PhD in social anthropology.
She was named Press Gazette British Journalism Awards Journalist of the Year in 2009. She was on the FT's capital markets team in the run-up to the global financial meltdown of 2008 and she was credited with being one of the few journalists to see the warning signs before the disaster.
The FT has a print circulation in the US of 45,000 out of a total of 224,250.
