Mail on Sunday City reporter, and former Press Gazette news editor, Will Turvill has been named by judges alongside Guido Fawkes’ Alex Wickham as among the UK’s top 30 young journalists.
The pair took home the top prizes in their respective fields of finance and politics alongside six other “gold” winners and an overall total of 30 winners at the MHP 30 To Watch Awards last night.
Now in their seventh year, the awards recognise the best upcoming talent in the news media. This year’s winners were selected from some 400 entries across more than 90 different titles.
Turvill, 28, (pictured top, centre) said: “I’m cock-a-hoop.”
Judges included ITN News programme editor Camilla Mankabady, Financial Times motor industry correspondent Peter Campbell, Daily Mail contributing editor Roger Alton, CNN London executive producer David Ford, and freelance journalists Jo Willey and Aisha Gani.
Guardian food critic Jay Rayner handed out the awards to media outlets ranging from Buzzfeed, Vice and Sky News to the Mail on Sunday, BBC and the Daily Telegraph.
He said: “A lot has changed in the media since I won a young journalist award almost 30 years ago. But what’s great is that a lot has stayed the same.
“How people get their news may be changing fast, but the stories they want and the skills required to find them are really much the same.
“These winners show that the future of the UK media is in good hands.”
Alex Bigg, chief executive of PR firm MHP Communications, said: “We are proud to host the 30 to Watch awards.
“This year’s event was bigger than ever and I am very confident that the young journalists who have won tonight will go on to great things, just like many of the 30 To Watch winners from previous years.”
