Fleet Street remembers Richard Stott – “enemy of the greedy and corrupt”

By Press Gazette

Hundreds of friends and former colleagues of former Daily Mirror editor Richard Stott filled St Clement Danes Church on the Strand for his memorial service yesterday.

Stott, who edited the Daily Mirror and The People twice as well as Today, was described by Sunday Mirror editor Tina Weaver as the enemy of the “self serving, greedy and corrupt”.

She also recalled how he had continued to write his Mirror column from his hospital to near the point of his death.

Former Mirror colleague of Stott’s, Alastair Campbell, recalled Stott’s first words to him: “Are you the kid who hit Bob Edwards?” – when Edwards was editor of the Sunday Mirror and Campbell was on the Mirror training scheme.

Those attending the funeral, which was held at St Celement Danes where Stott had married wife Penny, included: former Lord Chancellor Derry Irvine, Trinity Mirror chief executive Sly Bailey, current Mirror editor Richard Wallace and former Mirror editors: Roy Greenslade, Colin Myle and Mike Malloy.

Actress Nichola McAuliffe, wife of Mirror reporter Don Mackay, sang Swing Low Sweet Chariot in honour of Stott’s love of rugby.
