First Telegraph redundancies revealed as title cuts 80 journalism jobs

By William Turvill

A number of high-profile names at the Telegraph have been told they are to be made redundant.

Some 80 jobs are to be lost as Telegraph Media Group merges the Daily and Sunday titles and creates 50 new digital journalism positions.

The Guardian has reports that investigations editor Jason Lewis, defence correspondent Sean Rayment, education writer Julie Henry, arts writer Roya Nikkah, medical correspondent Stephen Adams, City writer Helia Ebrahimi are leaving, head of technology Shane Richmond and news reporters Richard Alleyne and Wesley Johnson are leaving

The news comes as Press Gazette today revealed, in Journalism Weekly, details of 17 job cuts across the Independent titles – including three out of 12 general news reporters.

Some 50 journalists have taken voluntary redundancy at The Guardian and Observer. But after a deal was struck with the National Union of Journalists compulsory redundancies were avoided.

The Financial Times is in the process of cutting 35 editorial positions and recruiting 10 new digital journalism jobs.
