Express offers £3k retraining redundancy deal

By Press Gazette

The NUJ says it has negotiated a £3,000 retraining package for journalists losing their jobs in the latest round of redundancies at Express Newspapers.

The newspaper group, which publishes the Express and Star titles, announced plans to cut up to 70 editorial staff earlier this year.

Commenting on the retraining package, the union said: 'The package will enable redundant journalists, including regular casuals, to improve their skills and, if they choose, take up new careers outside journalism.

'Arrangements for this training can be made through the chapel and the national union."

Negotiations between management and the union are ongoing but a number of high-profile journalists have already left the company.

According to The Guardian, they include Sunday Express's long-serving literary editor Graham Ball, Daily Express health editor Victoria Fletcher, sports writer Matt Law, Daily Express sports editor Bill Bradshaw; Gary Pearson, assistant chief page editor on the Daily Star sports desk; Fred Boyce, art director at the Daily Express sports desk; and Amy Davies, art director on S Magazine.

Scottish Sunday Express editor Derek Lambie left the paper last month.

NUJ deputy general secretary Barry Fitzpatrick said: 'We are strongly opposed to the scale of job cuts being proposed and so far have prevented compulsory redundancies.

'Talks continue under the extended consultation window and cover staff in London, Broughton and Glasgow.

'The NUJ considers that the company failed to exploit the opportunity of last year's News of the World closure and is not responding to the digital challenge facing the industry."
