A former police officer from the Met’s specialist operations command has been released on bail pending further inquiries following his arrest by officers investigating inappropriate payments.
The 57-year-old was held on suspicion of misconduct in a public office relating to the phone-hacking scandal yesterday.
Officers from the Met’s Operation Elveden arrested the man at his home at 6.30am yesterday before taking him into custody at a south west London police station and conducting a search at the property.
He was released yesterday evening and bailed to a date in August, according to Scotland Yard.
The arrest was the result of information provided to police by News Corporation‘s Management Standards Committee and related to suspected payments to a former police officer, and was ‘not about seeking journalists to reveal confidential sources in relation to information that has been obtained legitimately”, the Met said yesterday.
Operation Elveden is being supervised by the Independent Police Complaints Commission and is being run in conjunction with Operation Weeting, the Met inquiry into phone-hacking.
He was the 27th person to be arrested by officers from Operation Elveden.
