Evening Standard to distribute record 1m copies for election coverage

By William Turvill

One million copies of the London Evening Standard are to be distributed today, more than ever before, the newspaper has said.

According to ABC, the free London title's average daily circulation in April was 896,830.

A press release said the extra copies were being distributed to provide the capital with "quality general election analysis on results day".

With the front page headline "Cameron back as heads roll", the newspaper reports on the election result in full as well as the resignations of party leaders Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg and Nigel Farage.

Editor Sarah Sands said: “For the past six weeks, Londoners, whatever their political views, have been captivated by the election campaign.

"Today we are the first newspaper to bring the astonishing drama of this election result to our readers in reports, photographs, analysis and comment.

"We are marking this historic event by increasing the circulation of the newspaper from 900,000 to a million.”
