End of an era as Sunday Post set to move last newspaper journalists from Fleet Street

Press Gazette understands the last newspaper journalists based on Fleet Street are set to move out next month.

Scotland’s DC Thomson is the last newspaper publisher to retain an office on the famous London street, which was once home to most of the UK’s national newspaper titles.

Press Gazette understands three Sunday Post editorial staff based in the Fleet Street office are facing redundancy.

DC Thomson, which also publishes the Beano, Evening Express, Courier and Press and Journal, will keep its landmark office on Fleet Street but with other non-editorial staff housed there.

News agency Reuters was among the last newsrooms based on Fleet Street before it moved staff to new offices in Canary Wharf in 2005. Agence France Press departed a few years later in 2009.

A spokesperson said: “DC Thomson has entered into consultation with three Sunday Post editorial staff members. No staff members within other DC Thomson newspaper editorial teams are affected and we will not be closing our Fleet Street office.

“These roles will be relocated to strengthen the Sunday Post’s coverage in Scotland by introducing a new edition structure.”

James Millar, a former reporter at the Post who worked out of the Fleet Street office, said: “When I was offered my job, a post on actual Fleet Street was something you couldn’t say no to.

“It is sad that there will be no news journalists on Fleet Street now. But the guys who are left there say it’s just not the same job anymore.

“It must have been amazing back in the day.”
