The editor of the Irish Sun Paul Clarkson has been appointed as The Sun’s new managing editor, replacing Stig Abell who has become editor of News UK’s literary title TLS.
Clarkson is a long-standing journalist, unlike Abell who was not a journalist but a director of the Press Complaints Commission before taking on the role of managing editor of The Sun.
During his tenure as managing editor, Abell would on occasion edit the paper.
Clarkson has been editor of the Irish Sun for three years, prior to which he spent seven years as number two on the paper.
Clarkson will be replaced by Kieran McDaid, currently deputy editor of the title, who will be made acting editor.
Tony Gallagher, editor-in-chief of The Sun, said: “Paul has been editor of The Irish Sun for three years and has done brilliantly building out a distinct identity for the Irish edition, cementing the paper as the most-read tabloid in Ireland as well as staring an edition in Northern Ireland.”
Prior to Abell, the managing editor of The Sun was the combative Richard Caseby.
In a further change, the editor of the Scottish edition of the Times Les Snowdon is moving south to become assistant editor of The Sun.
He will be replaced by his current deputy Alan Muir, who becomes acting editor.
Gallagher added: “Les brings him a wealth of top newspaper experience, having been the Scottish editor of The Times for just over a year and previously sports editor of The Daily Mail.
