By Andrew Pugh

Manchester Evening News deputy editor Ian Wood has been named the new editor of Plymouth’s The Herald.

He takes over from former editor Bill Martin who left last month to edit the Western Morning News after the departure of Alan Qualtrough.

Wood began his career as a reporter in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, working his way up to the newsdesk before moving to Manchester as news editor, and later deptuty editor,

He said: ‘As someone who was raised in Devon I am looking forward to joining the Herald team in Plymouth. The Herald is a title that has a great reputation in the industry and I know I am joining a team of very talented journalists.”

Andrew Blair, managing director of South West Media Group, said: ‘Ian is a great addition to the team, his extensive experience will be invaluable and I look forward to working with him in his new role.’

The latest ABC figures for the The Herald for the last six months of 2011 show circulation was down 6.7 per cent to 28,303.
