David Walsh urges Oprah to ask Lance Armstrong: ‘Did you sue the Sunday Times to shut us up?’

By Press Gazette

Sunday Times chief sports writer David Walsh has signed an ad which appears in the Chicago Tribune today suggesting 10 questions Oprah Winfrey should ask disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong.

The drug-cheat cyclist is due to appear on Oprah this Thursday and is expected to make some form of confession.

Walsh, who in December was named Journalist of the Year at the British Journalism Awards in recognition of his coverage of the Lance Armstrong story, says in his letter:

“Dear Oprah,

I have spent the past 13 years investigating allegations that Lance Armstrong had taken performance-enhancing drugs. I have just been voted journalist of the year in the UK.

Here are the 10 questions I would ask Lance…”

They include:

  • ”Did you sue the Sunday Times to shut us up?
  • “Do you accept your lying to the cancer community was then greatest deception of all?”
  • “Why have you chosen Oprah Winfrey for your first interview as a banned athlete?”

Adding a PS, Walsh writes in the ad: “The Sunday Times is seeking to recover about $1.5m it claims he got by fraud. He used Britain’s draconian libel laws against us.”
