Daily Mail journalist turned playwright dies in New York

Former Daily Mail journalist Richard Lay died in New York over the weekend.

The 66-year-old was a former editor of the Charles Greville gossip column and was also Nigel Dempster’s deputy for a time.

He is understood to have died from liver cancer.

After moving to the US he freelanced for several Fleet Street papers but also made his name as a playwright. Several of Lay’s plays were produced off Broadway.
