‘Boring’ photocall saw editors publish candid topless David Cameron beach shots

Editors breached an apparent agreement with the Camerons not to publish paparazzi photos of them on holiday after posed photos at the start of the holiday were seen as “boring”.

This was the view of one well-placed source speaking after the Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, Telegraph and Times all published pictures of Prime Minister David Cameron on the beach in Cornwall. Published photos included snaps of the PM topless and changing into his trunks behind a towel.

Photos were also published in the Sunday Times, Huffington Post and by the BBC. The Sun is among the titles to decline to use the photos.

Agencies including Reuters and Getty distributed pictures on Tuesday of David and Samantha Cameron sitting at a table on the first day of their holiday in Polzeath, Cornwall.

According to Number 10, there is an agreement in place with editors that after this official photocall the Camerons will not be pictured again while enjoying their holiday.

But editors have questioned how binding this agreement is. And agency Apex, which  took the candid photos of Cameron on the beach, said it was not made aware of any agreement.

Two photographers from the agency took photos of Cameron on the beach in public areas and in clear sight of the Prime Minister’s security staff.

The Press Complaints Commission said it has not received any complaints over publication of the Cameron photos.
