Andy Coulson to appear in Scottish court next month on perjury charge

By Press Gazette

David Cameron's former communications chief Andy Coulson will appear in court in Scotland next month.

The 46-year-old was yesterday served with an indictment to face proceedings at the High Court in Glasgow on 6 August, the Crown Office confirmed.

Former News of the World editor Coulson was charged with perjury by police in 2012 after being questioned in connection to his evidence at the 2010 Tommy Sheridan perjury trial.

He appeared in private at Glasgow Sheriff Court in June 2013 where he made no plea or declaration and was granted bail.

A Crown Office spokesman said: "The Crown Office can confirm that an indictment was served on Andrew Coulson today, 7 July 2014 and that a Preliminary Hearing is scheduled for 6 August 2014 at the High Court at Glasgow."

Former Scottish MSP Sheridan was jailed at the end of 2010 after a jury found that he lied whilst giving evidence during a 2006 libel trial against the News of the World in which he was awarded £200,000 damages over reports he visited swingers' clubs.
