Daily Telegraph assistant editor and columnist Andrew Pierce is leaving the paper to join the Daily Mail as consultant editor.
It is the latest move in a series of tit-for-tat hirings – as the Mail and Telegraph have frequently poached each other’s editorial talent in recent years.
Telegraph editor Tony Gallagher, himself a former Daily Mail news editor, said: “Andrew has made a great contribution to The Daily Telegraph and we wish him extraordinarily well.”
According to the Mail, Pierce will take a leading writing and reporting role on the paper and have his own column.
Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre said: “I have long admired Andrew as one of those rare all-round journalists who is both a brilliant writer and a fearless and remorseless story getter. He will be a huge asset to the paper.”
Pierce, 48, joined the Telegraph as assistant editor in 2006 from The Times, where he had the same job.
After beginning his journalism career in local newspapers and then freelancing for the nationals, Pierce first joined The Times in 1988. Following a spell as assistant editor at the Daily Express, he rejoined The Times in 1999, in the same job.
