£7bn Barclay brothers head up the top ten figures involved in journalism on Sunday Times Rich List

Who says there’s no money in journalism?

The owners of some of the UK’s biggest newspapers rank highly on the Sunday Times Rich List of the country’s most wealthy individuals. Although it is worth noting that many make most of their money from other business interests outside the media.

Here’s the top ten entries on the The Sunday Times Rich List of those whose business interests include the world of journalism:

1. Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay: £700m (12th overall). They own Telegraph Media Group and sold their stake in the Maybourne Group of luxury hotels last year.

2. Richard Desmond: £2,250m (48). The Express Newspapers owner made £463m from the sale of Channel 5 in 2014.

3. The Thomson family: £1,280m (84). They own Dundee-based DC Thomson.

4.Viscount Rothermere and family: £1,000m (117). Wealth mainly derived from the family stake in Daily Mail and General Trust.

5. Mike Danson: £488m (239). Founder of Datamonitor. Since then has launched Progressive Media Group (which Press Gazette is part of).

6. Cristina Stenbeck: £400m (280).Owner of Kinnevik which publishes Metro free newspapers across Europe (but not the UK version).

7. Mark Getty: £325m (333). Retains a £200m stake in Getty Images, but no longer chairman.

8. Lord Heseltine and family: £300m (350). Wealth mainly comes from Haymarket Media Group.

9. Lord Iliffe and family: £290m (364). Owns Yattendon Group whose Iliffe News and Media titles were part of Local World, which was sold to Trinity Mirror in a £240m
deal last November.

10. Sir Ray Tindle: £110m (885). Owner of the local newspaper group which bears his name.
