Orca launches SurfGirl as standalone magazine

By Rachael Gallagher

Surfing magazine Carve has spun off its supplement for female surfers, SurfGirl, as a standalone magazine.

Published by Orca Publications, SurfGirl launched this month as independent title to initially be published four times a year.

It has an initial distribution of 15,000 and will be available in surf shops, supermarkets and newsagents including W H Smiths.

There are two full-time staff members, publishing editor Louise Searle and assistant editor Kat Dawes.

Dawes said that the growing interest in surfing among young women meant it was the right time to launch. ‘We do four issues a year in the summer at the moment because that’s when the most demand is but hopefully we’ll be able to build it up. Girl surfing has taken on in such a massive way.”

‘We did one stand alone issue last summer and it was really well received and we’ve managed to find a lot of advertising to launch it as a stand alone.”
