Newsweek names new Europe editor after scrapping dedicated London-based print team

By William Turvill

Time Magazine Europe editor Matt McAllester has been named as the new editor of Newsweek Europe.

His appointment comes shortly after the title's dedicated London-based print team was scrapped.

Press Gazette reported earlier this month that eight journalists were set to lose their jobs: two commissioning editors, two designers, two sub-editors and two picture editors.

Newsweek Europe is continuing, but in future editorial content will more closely follow the US edition.

In his role, McAllester will oversee the magazine's Europe, Middle East and Africa edition and report directly to Newsweek editor-in-chief Jim Impoco. According to Capital in New York, Richard Addis – who stepped down as Newsweek Europe's editor-in-chief this month – did not report to Impoco.

A press statement said: "As Editor of Newsweek Europe, McAllester will drive editorial content from Europe, the Middle East and Africa, overseeing the London-based staff writers as well as freelancers out in the field. He will work closely with Newsweek's New York headquarters on breaking news as well as features, and to oversee the EMEA edition of the magazine."

Impoco said: "Matt and I are in complete sync about the opportunity for long form, hard-hitting, narrative journalism across Europe, the Middle Eastand Africa. He has a deep and sophisticated grasp of the European conversation and is a risk-taking and entrepreneurial journalist and editor."

McAllester has been Time Magazine Europe editor for two years.
