A quarterly with aims of tapping into the high-end market of men’s magazines is set to launch early next month.
The independently published title – called Port – aims to take on the sector with a roster of high-profile contributors.
Samantha Morton, Jon Snow, Hanif Kureishi, and the former director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts Ekow Eshun will all contribute to the launch edition of the magazine.
Port is the brainchild of Dan Crowe, founding editor of Zembla and former literary editor of Another Magazine, and designers Matt Wiley and Kuchar Swara, who have each contributed funding to get the magazine into print.
Crowe, who will edit the magazine, told Press Gazette that Port wanted to pitch itself against GQ and Esquire by turning a sharp eye on the contemporary world, something he thinks men’s magazines are currently failing to do.
‘It’s not a niche magazine; it’s a mag for men that takes everything in; from style, art, to things like humanitarian crisis, design and food…
‘People are going to see something that’s fresh and brilliant with engaging design, that’s engaging to read but that also has real integrity,’Crowe said.
‘We are treating each subject with an equal amount of respect. It’s not the case that we are running a fashion magazine with business and reportage bolted onto the side; we allow it all an equal footing.”
The first issue will have a print run of 64,000 and will be distributed internationally, Crowe said, with Comag taking responsibility for ensuring that it is available on newsstands.
In addition to its high-profile portfolio of contributing editors the launch issue, which will be distributed across the UK from 3 March priced £6, will feature a cover story detailing Daniel Day-Lewis’s reports from Gaza’s frontline.
