Haymarket buys stake in travel magazine Wanderlust

By Paul McNally

Haymarket has bought a stake in Wanderlust, the indpendent travel magazine published and edited by Lyn Hughes, for an undisclosed sum.

The magazine group joins two other private investors – John Brown and Mark Ellingham – in backing the title, which was founded by Hughes and her late husband Paul Morrison in 1993 and is about to publish its 100th issue.

Haymarket Consumer Media managing director Kevin Costello said: ‘This is a strategic investment that offers strong synergies with what we do in print and online, where our specialist, authoritative brands have shown just how well they can prosper digitally and internationally.

‘Where we feel we can particularly support Lyn and add to Wanderlust is through our digital expertise by helping with its expansion online.

‘Wanderlust holds a unique position in the marketplace. It’s a rightly strong and trusted brand that has seen off many potential competitors over the years, and is poised for further growth.”

Wanderlust is published eight times a year and provides a mixture of photography, writing, activities and cultural insight for travellers. Contributors include Michael Palin, Bill Bryson and Kate Humble.

The magazine claims to have subscribers in 112 countries and more than 100,000 readers.
