Five Computer Weekly staff in redundancy consultation

By Dominic Ponsford

Two of the most famous names in B2B journalism – Tony Collins and Bill Goodwin – are among senior editorial staff being consulted about possible redundancy as part of a restructuring of the editorial team at Computer Weekly.

The technology title is the latest Reed Business Information brand to reorganise its editorial staff into multimedia content teams working across print and online. Community Care, the RBI Road Transport Group and the Flight Group have already undergone similar shake-ups.

Press Gazette understands that five, mainly senior, Computer Weekly staff have been consulted about possible redundancy and that five new roles are being created as part of a new editorial structure. Six further Computer Weekly journalists are unaffected by the move.

Executive editor Collins has won numerous awards for his high-profile investigations into mismanaged government IT projects. News editor Bill Goodwin is known to any journalist who has studied media law for his seven-year-fight to protect a source while at The Engineer which culminated in a landmark European Court ruling in 1996.

Computer Weekly editor Bryan Glick confirmed that an editorial review was underway but said it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage while consultation is ongoing.

A journalist who knows the IT industry well, but who declined to me named, told Press Gazette: ‘There are people in the IT industry who would celebrate the departure of Tony Collins because he has been such a thorn in the side of people in that industry who have been rip-off merchants. He really does great stuff.”
