Regional newspaper web sites are well-represented on the shortlist for the prestigious Association of Online Publishers Awards, which were announced yesterday.
Gazette Live, the website of the Evening Gazette in Teeside which won website of the year at the Press Gazette Regional Press Awards, is nominated in four categories, including consumer online publisher of the year and consumer web site of the year.
Gazette Communities, the Teesside site’s postcode-level blogs were nominated in the online community category. Also nominated in that category is another Trinity Mirror regional site, Southportcommunities.com, the Southport Visiter’s blog-based local newspaper site. The two regionals face national newspaper competition in these categories from the MySun and MyTelegraph sites.
Because content from the hyperlocal sites is now being reverse-published in print publications, Gazette Communities was also shortlisted in the cross-media project category, alongside national rivals like the BBC’s Ashes coverage, the BBC’s Play It Again Music, the Guardian’s BAE Files investigation, Incisive Media’s Insider Business Club, Channel 4’s “Lost Experience”, the Telegraph’s budget coverage, and Times Online’s “Best of MBA” podcast.
ManchesterEveningNews.co.uk and Gazette Live are both nominated in the consumer editorial team of the year category, along with FT.com, Telegraph.co.uk, and online magazine The First Post.
The Nigel Green Recruit, a Apprentice-style competition run by Northcliffe’s s ThisIsSouthDevon site and the Torquay Herald Express, is nominated in the innovation category. It faces competition from the BBC, CMPMedica, Guardian Unlimited, MSN, and Telegraph.co.uk.
