One of Germany’s leading financial daily newspapers is moving its editorial headquarters to London during the EU Referendum week to “analyze the historic event”.
Handelsblatt, which has an English-language global edition, will bring more than 50 journalists from Germany to cover a possible Brexit from Tuesday 23 June to Saturday 25 June.
The subscription-based publication has said it will be holding on-the-record discussions with “high-level representatives from the world of business, politics, banking and media” to discuss the referendum and its implications for Britain and Europe each evening from 5pm.
Among guests will be Sigmar Gabriel, Germany’s vice chancellor and economics minister, Antonio Simoes, CEO of HSBC Bank, Inga Beale, CEO of Lloyd’s of London, David McAllister, a German-Scottish member of the European Parliament and Lord Stephen Green, former British trade minister.
The paper has said the talks, hosted at The Beagle in Geffrye Street, will be followed by “drinks and music” and is inviting members of the British public to join in the nightly sessions (see below for details on how to register).
Gabor Steingart, CEO of Handelsblatt Publishing Group, said: “Next week, we are moving the Handelsblatt newsroom from Germany to London to follow and analyze the historic events taking place in the financial heart of Europe.
“The modern newspaper marries inspiration and information, as well as substance and proximity, to deliver new relevance and immediacy to its readers.”
Britain will go to the polls to vote on whether to remain or leave the European Union on Thursday 23 June with the result expected the following morning as counting takes place overnight.
