Vice News appoints Newsnight deputy as London bureau chief ahead of video expansion

By Dominic Ponsford

Website Vice News has announced plans to grow its UK video team the day after making five London-based journalists redundant.

A further 15 journalists were laid off this week by Vice in the US.

Today the Youth Media brand named Neil Breakwell has London bureau chief for Vice News, joining from the BBC where he was deputy editor at BBC Newsnight.

The move comes as Vice prepares to launch the Viceland TV channel in the UK and France later this year.

Vice said in a press release: “Breakwell joins as Vice News UK is set to expand its existing award-winning online video offering. Vice News will grow its existing staff of 18 in the coming weeks, adding new hires across editorial, production, as well as multi-platform journalists who will be deployed across digital and TV.

Vice News head of news programming for Europe, Kevin Sutcliffe, moves into the role of senior vice president TV and Video Programming, EMEA.
