The controversial Dispatches Undercover Mosque programme has been nominated for a Royal Television Society Television Journalism Award.
The Channel 4 programme, which was subject to a police investigation that was subsequently dropped and also vindicated by the regulator Ofcom, is up for the national current affairs programme title.
Another Dispatches programme, Meeting the Taliban, is up for the international current affairs award. Its maker, Sean Langan has already won a Rory Peck Award for his initial documentary on the subject, Fighting the Taliban. Dispatches will be pitted against Panorama’s Taking on the Taliban and China’s Stolen Children, a True Vision production for Dispatches about child trafficking in the country.
Al Jazeera English is up for news channel of the year in its first year of broadcasting and will be up against BBC News 24 and last year’s winner Sky News.
The awards will be presented on Wednesday 20 February 2008 at a ceremony at the London Hilton, hosted by ITV News at Ten’s Julie Etchingham.
