Sky News Arabia Twitter accounts hacked by ‘Syrian Electronic Army’

By Andrew Pugh

Sky News Arabia’s Twitter and Facebook accounts were targeted by hackers last night, the broadcaster has revealed.

A group calling itself the “Syrian Electronic Army” hacked into two of the channel’s Twitter accounts at midnight UAE time and its Facebook account several hours later.

The accounts affected were the channel’s main twitter handle @skynewsarabia and the @skynewsarabia account used for cultural and entertainment news, as well as the Facebook page facebook/skynewsarabia.

“Sky News Arabia has regained control of the hacked accounts and is taking precautionary measures to ensure all its IT systems are secure,” the channel said this morning.

“It is anticipated this process will be completed later today, at which time the channel’s social media accounts will be reactivated.”

The 24-hour Arabic news service was launched in May 2012.
