Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

ITN signs deal to produce Channel 5 news bulletins until 2020

By Freddy Mayhew

Channel 5 has signed a four-year contract with ITN to continue producing 5 News until 2020.

The 5 News team will be relocated to ITN’s headquarters in Gray’s Inn Road, central London, with a new set and a new look for the programme. The deal is said to be worth upwards of £35m.

The announcement follows the arrival of former BBC Breakfast host Sian Williams (pictured) as presenter of 5 News at 5. The programme is followed at 6.30pm by a second bulletin presented by Matt Barbet.

Each week 5m viewers are said to tune in to the news programmes across the channel.

Under editor Cristina Nicolotti Squires, 5 News won a nomination for the Home News category of this year’s Royal Television Society Journalism Awards.

Paul Dunthorne, Channel 5’s chief operating officer, said:  “This deal reinforces our commitment to provide a high quality and accessible news service.

“Under Cristina Nicolotti Squires and her talented team both in front and behind the camera, 5 News continues to deliver consistently impactful and insightful news programming with broad appeal.”

ITN chief executive John Hardie said: “Five News consistently delivers distinctive, authoritative news programmes and I am delighted that Channel 5 has demonstrated its ongoing commitment to our innovative and high quality output.”
