The BBC’s £270,000 a year head of television Roger Mosey has been appointed to the new job of head of editorial standards.
He will “take the lead in handling major editorial issues as they arise” and report directly in to director general Tony Hall, who has editor-in-chief has the final say on editorial issues. Mosey stays on the same salary.
His appointment follows a major shake-up at the corporation in the wake of scandal over a decision by former Newsnight editor Peter Rippon to spike a report revealing that Jimmy Savile was a serial sex attacker and the later decision by the BBC to air a Newsnight report which falsely suggested former Conservative politician Lord McAlpine was involved in child abuse.
Since then, former BBC head of news Helen Boaden has been moved sideways to the job of director of radio (retaining a £340,000 salary). Rippon has been made BBC Online Archive editor and Radio Five controller Adrian Van Klaveran (who approved Newsnight’s Lord McAlpine report) has been made controller of the corporation’s coverage of the centenary of the First World War (salary £186,850).
In April the BBC announced the appointment of former Times editor James Harding to the £340,000-a-year head of news position.
The BBC also has a management board member responsible for development and implementation of editorial policy and standards. David Jordon was on a salary of £167,000 as of June 2012.
Hall said: "It is crucial that the BBC dedicates the right amount of time, skill and expertise to addressing the myriad of editorial challenges that we face across the BBC’s output. Roger’s experience in News, Sport and most recently Television make him ideally placed to fulfill such an important role as part of my management team."
In August 2012 Mosey was made acting director of television. He was previously Director of London 2012, responsible for all BBC Olympics coverage. Previous BBC jobs include being editor of Today, controller of BBC Radio 5 Live, head of BBC Television News and director of sport.
