A memorial to the former deputy news editor of the Daily Mirror, Phil Mellor, is to be held at St Bride’s Church in Fleet Street next month.
Mellor died in October last year following a battle with cancer at the age of 69. He worked on Fleet Street for 40 years, including on the newsdesk at The Mirror, Sunday Mirror and the Daily Star.
Mellor was a popular character in the newsroom, with former Mirror news editor Tom Hendry telling Press Gazette: “He was unique, a one-off chap, always cheerful and was one of the funniest people alive.”
During his career at the Mirror, Mellor (pictured) oversaw coverage of both the Lockerbie bombing and Hillsborough disaster.
The memorial service will take place on 9 May at 11.30am, on what would have been Mellor’s 70th birthday.
It has been organised by Mellor’s son, James, who is encouraging friends and former colleagues to attend.
Refreshments will be held at the Punch Tavern on Fleet Street after the service.
