Alan Rusbridger appointed chairman of Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford

By John Reynolds

Alan Rusbridger, the former editor of the Guardian, has been appointed chairman of the steering committee at The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.

The part-time job at the Oxford University-based institute will add to a number of other roles Rusbridger has taken on since he stood down as editor-of-chief of the Guardian in May 2015.

Rusbridger, who is soon to take over as chair of The Scott Trust which owns The Guardian, is also principal of Oxford’s Lady Margaret Hall college, as well as being a visiting professor of history at Queen Mary, University of London, and a director of the National Theatre.

Rusbridger succeeds Tim Gardam as chair of the steering committee at The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. Gardam has been chairman of the steering committee during its first decade in existence.

Monique Villa, chief executive of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, said: “Under the guidance of Tim Gardam, the Reuters Institute has undoubtedly become one of the most successful public policy research centres at the University of Oxford, and one of the most authoritative voices of the study journalism and its fast changing trends.”

“We are all very proud of what Tim has accomplished; and I am sure that Alan’s expertise will allow the Institute to continue to build an even bigger profile, helping to shape many of the key questions dominating the media industry.”

The Reuters Institute for The Study of Journalism was founded in 2006. The institute is a research centre and think tank which carries out research on news media, hosts academic research talks and runs the Thomson Reuters Fellowship Programme.
