Former BBC producer and editor Sir Antony Jay has called for the broadcaster to be radically slimmed down, arguing that the £3.2bn annual licence fee will soon become “indefensible in theory and unenforceable in practice”.
The co-writer of Yes Minister said the BBC’s digital channels, BBC3 and BBC4, should “make their excuses and leave” and that the BBC should be stripped down to one mainstream TV channel, a radio speech channel and a news department.
The former BBC business editor, Jeff Randall, has also argued that the BBC “does too much, spreading its resources too thinly”.
Writing in the Telegraph, Randall said: “Inside the BBC, my views are regarded as a thought-crime, somewhere between treachery and heresy.”
