Washington Post to close offices across the US

By Press Gazette

The Washington Post is closing its bureaux in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York as the loss-making paper looks to cut costs and focus more on politics and local news in the US capital.

The six reporters working in its domestic offices across the US will be offered new posts in Washington, while three news assistants will leave.

The move follows the Post axing several employees from its online operation and several rounds of redundancy in recent years.

Post executive editor Marcus Brauchli told staff in an internal memo: “At a time of limited resources and increased competitive pressure, it’s necessary to concentrate our journalistic firepower on our central mission of covering Washington and the news, trends and ideas that shape both the region and the countries politics, policies and government.”

The newspaper division of parent business, the Post Company, which also includes several smaller papers, lost $166.7m in the first nine months of this year.
