Video: Jeremy Hunt opens consultation on wide-ranging media deregulation

By Dominic wireposts

The Government has opened consultation on a wide-ranging Communications Bill which could well have a major impact on the future of local news (in print, online and on TV), self regulation of the press and the BBC.

In an open letter outlining the purpose of the consultation Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt said:

“Our ambition is to establish UK communications and media markets as amongst the most dynamic and successful in the world, with the review process culminating in a new communications framework by 2015, to support the sector for the next 10 years and beyond. To help realise this ambition, we would like to begin the review by opening a dialogue with all those interested in the issues involved, and gather views on some specific questions posed in this letter.”

The deadline for responses to the consultation is 30 June and interested parties can respond online here.
