It’s now 30 years since one of the most bitter and lengthy industrial disputes in NUJ history started at the Nottingham Evening Post.
Some 28 reporters and subs from the Post took part in a nationwide NUJ regional press strike.
The Post was the only paper in the country not take back its journalists after the strike ended when managing director Christopher Pole-Carew sacked them for being “disloyal”.
They remained ‘on strike’ for three years and brought out their own newspaper, the Nottingham News, veteran Terry Wooton told Press Gazette. He recalled that the Co-op was among those placing full-page ads, Brian Clough refused to have anything to do with the Evening Post and Michael Parkinson contributed features.
After four of the 28 took part in a Radio Nottingham programme on the strike, they’re having having a reunion in Nottingham. Most have been tracked down and will be at the event on March 7 – but there are still five who have yet to be tracked down.
They are Peter Anderson, once on the Loughborough Echo, Robin Anderson, last heard of working in Northumberland, Steve Clark, who has worked for Al Jazeera, Paul Cowan ex-editor of the Stornoway Gazette, and Jim Mercer, who came from Long Eaton.
Anyone who can help locate them should contact Terry Wootton on terry.Wootton@talktalk.net or phone 0115-9123018.
