Veteran Nottinghamshire-based journalist John Hobson has died at the age of 76.
Speaking to the Nottingham Evening Post, Hobson’s son, Sunday Times sports writer Richard Hobson said: "He enjoyed being around journalists. He couldn't divorce himself from watching the news or reading the papers after being part of that world."
Hobson worked at various newspapers including the Nottingham Evening News and the Ilkeston Advertiser, before joining newly formed BBC Radio Nottingham in 1970.
Friend and BBC colleague Colin Slater said: "I remember him chiefly for the way he could turn the story round, but also the way he could get the story in the first place because of how he got along with people.”
Among the journalists he helped train while working at the BBC was broadcaster Simon Mayo, who worked at Radio Nottingham in the 1980s.
Richard said: "I think what's become clear to me over the past week or so was just how jolly he was. I don't think he ever forgot what it was like to be a child."
