Twitter is set to stop counting pictures and links in its 140-character limit.
The move, yet to be publically announced, will mean tweeters will benefit from up to 47 additional characters in their tweets. Short links currently use up 23 charactersand images take up 24.
Bloomberg, who first revealed the news, said the company had considered raising the character limit, initially implemented to reflect limits on SMS text messages, to as many as 10,000 characters.
But Twitter’s brevity has helped set it apart from other social media platforms.
Chief executive Jack Dorsey was reported as saying in January that the company was looking for new ways to display text on Twitter in response to users’ practice of sharing images taken of longer articles to get around the character limit.
A spokesman for Twitter refused to comment.
