The Whip feels the lash

By Grey Cardigan

A SNOUT tells me that The Sun has binned The Whip, its waspish gossip column, which would be a shame because it was one of the better things in the newspaper.

Can the financial squeeze be that bad? Let’s do the math. Half a dozen snippets a day bought in at £100 apiece, five days a week, 52 weeks a year; plus a sub/editor to pull it together … can’t be more than £200,000 a year, can it? Hmm … yes, well.

And while we’re at it, I can’t recall seeing David Blunkett’s ridiculously expensive column (anywhere between £60-£120k) recently. Is he another victim of the beancounters? If so, I can’t see many tears being shed on his behalf.
