The Sun has become the latest national newspaper to launch a paid-for iPad app after a delay placed on the news International title because of the Page 3 content it carries.
The launch follows an initial rejection of the application by Apple, which banned a third-party from carrying an app for The Sun because it violated the iTunes policy on “obscene content”.
Paid Content reported today that The Sun got round the restriction ‘because downloading requires customers to confirm that they are 17 or over since the app ‘contains age-restricted material’.”
The Sun follows News International stablemate The Times which launched its own paid-for iPad application earlier this month at a cost of £9.99 per month.
The Sun’s app will cost £4.99 for a month’s subscription however unlike The Times – which will later this month restrict assess to its website to paying customers – SunOnline remains free for the time being.
The Sun’s app gives readers access to a virtual on-screen edition of newspaper.
Other Fleet Street papers, include the Financial Times and the Daily Express, have also recently launched their own apps.
Paid Content reported at the start of the month that the FT has seen 130,000 downloads of its free iPad app since it was launched in the US (ahead of Apple releasing the iPad in the UK).
It also reported that The Times sold 5,000 downloads of its app in three days after launch and the Guardian’s free Eyewitness photography app has seen 149,000 downloads.
