The journalists who have used pay-offs to launch their own online publishing empires

By Dominic wireposts

The Independent has an interesting feature today looking at the many UK journalists who have set up their own commercial websites in niche areas.

Ian Burrel talks to former dance critic of the Daily Telegraph Ismene Brown who has set up Theartsdesk.com, David Parkin – founder of successful local business website network Thebusinessdesk.com and former Sunday Times travel writers Mark Hodson and David Wickers who have founded travel website 101holidays.co.uk.

As Press Gazette investigated a few months ago with our feature on ultra local websites – it’s never been easier to self publish, and if you can find the right niche the economics do stack up.

This is all exactly the sort of stuff we will be going into in some depth at Press Gazette’s Local Heroes conference on the future UK local journalism. It’s on 14 May at Kingston University.
