Tabloid journalists could give anonymous evidence to Leveson Inquiry

By admin

Tabloids journalists could get the chance to submit evidence to the Leveson Inquiry anonymously.

According to The Guardian, Leveson wants ‘key journalists”, including undercover former News of the World reporter Mazher Mahmood, to give evidence about working practices at tabloid newspapers.

Today’s report said:

The inquiry panel sees anonymous evidence as a way to uncover a true picture of life at Britain’s tabloid newspapers, after it was criticised for not including an expert adviser with experience at one of the red-top titles.

Leveson has the power to summon key journalists to give evidence under oath if other avenues have been exhausted. However, he has previously distanced himself from using this tactic.

A handful of journalists from each of the tabloids are understood to have already expressed an interest in assisting the inquiry.

The Leveson Inquiry has already heard from several figures from tabloid newspapers at a series of seminars held this month.

They include former Daily Star reporter Richard Peppiatt, ex-News of the World editor Phil Hall and The Sun’s associate editor Trevor Kavanagh.
