Survey suggests 29 per cent of UK adults own a tablet computer

By Dominic Ponsford

Some 29 per cent of UK adults now own a tablet computer, according to research commissioned by Newsworks (formerly the Newspaper Marketing Agency).

According to YouGov research they say this equates to 12.2m people – with a further 7 per cent of those questioned saying they plan to buy a tablet device in the next few months.

Their research suggests that Kindle Fire was the tablet most likely to be received as a gift (35 per cent) follwed by the iPad (24 per cent) and then the Samsung Galaxy (12 per cent).

According to Newsworks, 30 per cent of owners list “keeping up with the news” as one of the top three activities they plan to use their tablet for most. This was behind email (59 per cent), internet browsing (53 per cent), social networking (39 per cent) and playing games (37 per cent).

The sample size was 2055 adults and the survey was carried out between 28 and 31 December.

More data is available in the below presentation compiled by Newsworks. See Press Gazette's list of the best (and worst) UK news providers on tablet and mobile devices here.
