Survey finds one in four Times website readers might pay for access

By Dominic wireposts

A survey for Paid Content has found out that 23 per cent of Times Online readers might pay to read the new Times website. The survey has found that four per cent were extremely likely to pay, two per cent  very likely, four per cent fairly likely and 13 per cent somewhat likely.

The survey found that 76 per cent were not at all likely.

The old Times website Times Online was effectively switched off yesterday. Times and Sunday Times readers now have to register to read the The Times and Sunday Times websites. At the end of the month the sites are due to be come paid-for, costing £1 a day or £2 a week to access.

Paid Content believes the survey is “great news for Times Newspapers giving it plenty of room to try to convert a larger minority of susceptible readers than was previously thought”.

But it would be interesting to know what the overlap is between Times Online readers who say they would pay and Times newspaper print subscribers.

The new paid-for website will be free to print subscribers, who in May numbered 115,852 out of the total 485,568 print sale.
