Here’s how some of those who have made their money in the media and journalism industry fared in yesterday’s Sunday Times Rich List of the UK’s wealthiest 1,000 people.
Telegraph Group owners, Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay topped the list as the wealthiest media people in 26th place. They dropped four despite being £400m richer with an estimated fortune of £2,200m.
Richard Desmond has fallen from from 57th place last year to 76. HIs fortune was said to be level year on year at £950m.
Viscount Rothermere and family, who have a £547m stake in The Daily Mail and General Trust, are in 98th position this year, up two places. According to the Rich List their wealth rose £122m to £730m.
The Dundee-based Thomson family rose eight places to 112 with wealth said to be up £120m to £660m.
David Bromilow, former owner of medical publishing business, Meidimedia fell 20 places from 94 to 114 with wealth steady year-on-year at £650m.
Felix Dennis of Dennis Publishing’s steady £500m fortune saw him fall from 132 last year to 151.
Former Sport Newspapers owner David Sullivan dropped from 168 to 209, with wealth said to be down £2m to £298m.
David and Jacqueline Gold, who sold 50 per cent of Sport Newspapers in 2007, lost £20m last year, dropping down from 186 to 232. They are now worth £340m according to the Rich List.
Mike Danson, who chairs Progressive Digital Media Group and is the proprietor of Press Gazette, was said to be up £15m to £278m putting him in 274th place (253).
Elisabeth Murdoch and husband Matthew Freud rose £61m to £251m, according to the Rich List, taking them from 336 to 290.
Lord Iliffe‘s Berkshire-based local media business is now said to be worth £240m (the same as last year) putting him at 272 (299).
Sir Ray Tindle, founder of Tindle Press Holdings which publishes 225 local newspapers, was said to be worth £145m putting him at 459 (492).
Former Nottingham Evening Post owner, Nick Forman Hardy – said to be worth £102m – dropped from 688th position to 697.
Owen Oyston, owner of radio stations and magazines, dropped £5m to £80m according to the Rich List, taking him to 871 (763).
Douglas Graham, owner of Claverley, the newspaper group which includes the Wolverhampton Express and Star, was said to drop £10m to £70m putting him in 968th place (808).
