George Galloway has urged students at the University of Edinburgh to vote for Sunday Herald journalist Iain MacWhirter as its new rector.
The Bethnal Green and Bow MP had pulled out of the race – and backed MacWhirter, the award-winning political columnist, for the job.
MacWhirter, a former Edinburgh student, was the BBC’s Scottish political correspondent in the late Eighties and moved to Westminster in 1989 where he was a member of the Lobby for 10 years. He returned to Scotland to join the Sunday Herald in 1999.
Thousands of students will cast their votes online for the post next Wednesday and Thursday. There are two candidates: MacWhirter and Labour MSP Lord George Foulkes.
