Snow chaos prompts record traffic to news websites

By paulmcnally

BBC.co.uk and Times Online both claimed record traffic yesterday as large parts of the UK were paralysed by snow.

Writing on the BBC editors’ blog, BBC newsroom head Peter Horrocks said BBC.co.uk attracted 8.2 million unique users yesterday, including 5.1 million from the UK.

“Over 35,000 people sent us stills and video of the heavy snow across much of the UK,” he wrote. “This was a record both for the sheer number of pictures and almost certainly for the size of the audience response to a news event in the UK.”

Times Online assistant editor Tom Whitwell asked on Twitter: “Did any UK website not have an all-time record day yesterday? Times did 2m uniques, our blogs well up, I’m sure other papers the same.”
