Trinity Mirror chief executive Sly Bailey has said that the BBC’s deal to share video with the websites of four national newspapers groups will just help drive visitors to the BBC.
Under the deal announced this week, the BBC will allow the website of the Telegraph, Independent, Guardian and Mail titles carry a limited amount of BBC video provided that it is not linked to advertising and carries BBC branding. Trinity’s national titles have not signed up to the deal.
Bailey told The Guardian: “We are interested in real partnerships. We did not see that in what this [deal] offers, we are not here to build the BBC brand for them…
“The BBC needs to think more creatively about what those partnerships can be. We would welcome a genuine partnership and discussions are ongoing.”
The Press Association and ITN have both condemned the BBC deal because they fear it will curb their own fledgling businesses selling video footage to national press websites.
News International has also rejected the BBC video-sharing deal, because it said that it would: “provide marketing for the BBC at no cost”.
